Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) when monitoring of live sheep on a general basis was introduced in the restricted areas of Wales following the Chernobyl accident;

(2) how many scintillators were available to, and used by, his Department for the live monitoring of sheep in the restricted areas of Wales in each month from May 1986 to May 1987.

Mr. Peter Walker

The option of live-monitoring sheep became generally available to producers in the north Wales restricted area from the beginning of October 1986. From October 1986 to February 1987, a total of 10 live monitoring machines were generally in use and from March 1987 to May 1987 there were 15 machines.
