To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how Government financial targets and guidelines have affected British Rail's investment in improving the midland main line service between St. Pancras and Sheffield.

This service is part of BR's Inter-City network on which it is expected to earn a commercial rate of return. The board's confidence in the future of the line is demonstrated by its recent investment in a new pullman service and a £25 million resignalling programme.
