To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many intravenous drug abusers he estimates there are in(a) Glasgow and (b) Edinburgh.

Because of the nature of the activity it is very difficult to make precise estimates of the numbers of intravenous drug misusers. The current estimate is as follows:

Estimate
West Scotland (mainly Glasgow) 5,000–7,500
South East Scotland (mainly Edinburgh) 2,000–3,000
