Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland which economic sector in Scotland has the highest percentage of women workers; and what information he has as to its wages and salaries level in respect of other sectors of the economy.

The latest available estimates of employees in employment in Scotland are for September 1987. Of the five main industry sectors, the service sector is the one in which women account for the highest percentage of employees.

Information from the new earnings survey, which covers a 1 per cent. sample of employees who are members of PAYE schemes, is provided in the table.
