HC Deb 18 February 1988 vol 127 c708W
45. Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will take steps to safeguard the opportunities for drama and live music under the new regulations which will govern the expansion of radio.

Mr. Renton

The extent to which independent stations' programmes include drama and live music will be for the stations themselves to determine when applying for a licence to the radio authority. When making their applications they will no doubt have regard to the criteria which the authority will apply and to their obligation to maintain their promise of performance. The best safeguard for these opportunities will lie in the expansion of radio itself which the Government propose to make possible.
