§ Mr. VazTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received from Tower Hamlets council concerning immigration matters; and what account he took of these representations when formulating his policy on immigration.
§ Mr. RentonWhen my right hon. Friend visited Tower Hamlets in December 1986, the local council made representations to him about the problem of housing people who had been temporarily admitted to the United Kingdom while their claims were examined. The pressure on services in areas such as Tower Hamlets was one of the factors which we took into account in bringing forward clause 3 of the Immigration Bill which makes universal the requirement that those claiming the right of abode here should establish their claims before coming here.
§ Dr. ReidTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has received any representations regarding the right of hon. Members to intervene in immigration cases.
§ Mr. RentonI refer the hon. Member to the reply given earlier today to a question from the hon. Member for Glasgow, Pollok (Mr. Dunnachie).
