To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether there has been a Naval Emergency Monitoring Organisation team employed at the Clyde submarine base during the current year.

[holding answer 17 February 1988]: No Naval Emergency Monitoring Organisation teams have been activated at the Clyde submarine base in 1988.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether any civilian or naval personnel have been contaminated with radiation at Clyde submarine base in the course of January.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what detailed information is available to the Clyde local liaison committee on the consequences of an accident involving a nuclear reactor on the nuclear-powered submarines based at the Clyde submarine base.

[holding answer 17 February 1988]: The possible consequences of a nuclear submarine accident involving the Clyde submarine base are detailed in part 1 of the Clyde area public safety scheme, which is available to the Clyde local liaison committee.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what arrangements exist for the disposal of nuclear material arising from an accident to a nuclear submarine in or around the Clyde submarine base.

[holding answer 17 February 1988]: It is not our policy to discuss such arrangements in detail. However, depending on the severity of the incident, there would be a range of options, all of which would take full account of the interests of public safety.
