HL Deb 17 February 1988 vol 493 c750WA
The Earl of Selkirk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have any immediate intention of burying nuclear waste on the island of Raasay.

The Minister of State, Scottish Office (Lord Sanderson of Bowden)

No. The Government have asked the Nuclear Industry Radioactive Waste Executive (NIREX) to identify a site for a deep repository for low and intermediate-level radioactive waste. In November 1987 the executive issued a discussion document,The Way Forward, outlining the potential disposal options on land or under the sea and the types of geology which might be suitable. No decision has yet been taken on where a repository might be located.
