HC Deb 17 February 1988 vol 127 c626W
Sir Dudley Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what diagnostic services are available under the National Health Service for the detection of the disease Chlamydia; and what plans he has to extend these.

Mrs. Currie

Facilities to test for the presence of chlamydial infection are readily available at NHS laboratories. Research is proceeding to investigate the prevalance of chlamydial infection in patients attending ante-natal, genito-urinary medicine and family planning clinics, in order to determine at risk groups; and to establish whether there is any justification for screening pregnant women for this infection.
