HC Deb 17 February 1988 vol 127 cc599-601W
Mr. Andrew Bowden

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if he will make a statement on the criteria and conditions required by state and public schools for acceptance on the assisted places scheme;

(2) if he will list those schools, both state and public, that have applied to join the assisted places scheme in the last 12 months; and when he expects to announce his decision as to whether or not they have been accepted.

Mr. Dunn

The assisted places scheme exists to give help with tuition fees at certain independent secondary schools to the parents of able children who might not otherwise attend these schools. The principal criteria for admission to the scheme cover overall and sixth form size, curricular breadth, examination success and general academic merit. In addition, the Secretary of State has regard to the desirability of securing an equitable distribution of assisted places both geographically and between boys and girls.

A total of 128 schools have within the last 12 months submitted formal applications to join the scheme. These are listed in the table. Careful consideration is now being given to these applications and my right hon. Friend will announce the outcome in due course.
