HC Deb 16 February 1988 vol 127 c542W
Mr. Holt

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total revenue raised from traffic offences in each of the past five years in the metropolitan region.

Mr. John Patten

It is estimated that in 1986 the value of fines imposed by courts in the Metropolitan police district for offences related to motor vehicles was £10 million, but information on resulting payments is not available. Information on the number of fixed penalty notices paid, by police force area, is published annually in "Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables" (table 21 of the issue for 1986), copies of which are in the Library. For tickets issued in 1985, the latest year for which complete information is available, £11.7 million was paid as a result of fixed penalty notices issued by the Metropolitan police.
