Mr. Lee

I regret that the information is not available in the precise form requested.

However, the following table gives changes in retail prices over the 12 months to January each year for the closest approximation to the categories specified.

Northwich travel-to-work area, (ii) the Chester travel-towork area, and (iii) the Runcorn travel-to-work area; and what have been the figures in each year since the scheme's inception.

Mr. Cope

The figures are not available in the form requested. The Northwich, Chester and Runcorn travelto-work areas are all covered by the Cheshire enterprise allowance team. The table gives the number of participants

Mr. John Lee

The following information is in the Library. Unemployment figures are not comparable over the whole period because of changes in the coverage of the count, and in the boundary definitions of the travel-to-work areas. The table shows the number of unemployed registrants in the requested travel-to-work areas as defined in 1978, at January of each year from 1979 to 1982, the number of unemployed claimants in those areas at January 1983, and the number of unemployed claimants in the travel-to-work areas as defined in 1984 for January of each year from 1984 to 1987, expressed as a percentage of employees in employment and the unemployed. Long Melford, Lavenham, Ripley, Heanor, Upminster, Portland, Redditch, and Droitwich do not form travel-to-work areas; these areas are all only a small part of a travel-to-work area.
