HC Deb 16 February 1988 vol 127 c538W
Mr. Greg Knight

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many marmosets have been used for chemical warfare research in the United Kingdom in each of the past five years; and if he will list the establishments carrying out such research.

Mr. Sainsbury

Wherever possible, animals are not used in experiments. Where there is no suitable alternative the lowest order of animal possible is used for any experiment. It is not our practice to make available detailed information on the usage of a particular species for chemical defence research. Such information could enable an informed observer to gain a useful insight into the scope and direction of MOD's work to the detriment of national security.
