HC Deb 15 February 1988 vol 127 c416W
Mr. Wilshire

To ask the Attorney-General what assessment he has made of the likelihood of new evidence becoming available to enable him to reverse his intention not to continue with the appeal against the decision not to remove charity status from the Unification Church; what efforts are being made to obtain fresh evidence; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

With the leave of the court, my appeal has been discontinued and cannot therefore be proceeded with further. If circumstances were to change further so as seriously to call into doubt the charitable status of either of the trusts in question I would consider raising the matter afresh with the Charity Commissioners. Immense efforts were made by the Treasury Solicitor to obtain new material while the proceedings were pending, but no active steps are being taken to amass further evidence now that my action has been discontinued.
