HL Deb 15 February 1988 vol 493 c488WA
Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What discussions they have held with the Government of South Africa concerning the provision of information to the United Nations inquiry on the embargo on oil supplies to South Africa.

Lord Glenarthur

None.

Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the United Nations team investigating violations of the United Nations embargo on oil exports to South Africa has been provided with all the information it requested; and if not, why the assistance was not forthcoming.

Lord Glenarthur

The Intergovernmental Group to Monitor the Supply and Shipping of Oil and Petroleum Products to South Africa was established by a General Assembly resolution (41/35F) against which we voted (in company with the United States, France, Federal Republic of Germany and Israel), and which is not binding. We have therefore not responded to requests from the group for information on alleged violations of the comprehensive oil embargo envisaged in that resolution. Our own guidelines, which exclude the export of United Kingdom continental shelf crude oil to South Africa, remain in force and are effective.
