To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what level of resources has been allocated to foreign language teaching in Scottish schools in each of the past five years.

The numbers of teachers in education authority secondary schools in Scotland in 1984 whose main teaching subject was a foreign language was 2,105 (7.6 per cent. of all teachers). Information for the other years requested is not readily available.
