To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will refer to the Director General of Oftel British Telecom's practice of supplying subscribers' names, addresses and telephone numbers to other companies for use in unsolicited mail and telephone calls; and if he will make a statement.

The Director General of Telecommunications has a duty under section 49 of the Telecommunications Act 1984 to consider any matter which relates to telecommunication services or apparatus which is the subject of a representation by or on behalf of a person who has an interest in that matter. The director general will consider the hon. Member's question and write to him.
