HC Deb 15 February 1988 vol 127 c424W
Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs on what occasions the South African Government have made representations to him, seeking United Kingdom recognition of Bophuthatswana; by whom such representations were made; and what precise form they took.

Mrs. Chalker

My right hon. and learned Friend has received no such representations in recent years.

Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, further to the answer of 5 February, if he will make a statement on the relevance of the history of the people of Bophuthatswana before 1977 to the formulation of United Kingdom policy towards Bophuthatswana.

Mrs. Chalker

As I explained in my answer of 8 February, at column 56, our policy is based on the fact that Bophuthatswana was created out of the Republic of South Africa, as a key element in the policy of separate development, to which we are wholly opposed.
