HL Deb 11 February 1988 vol 493 c395WA
Baroness Faithfull

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why the Home Economics Department of the Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham, is under threat of closure.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Education and Science (Baroness Hooper)

Home economics teaching at Trent Polytechnic is confined to the secondary BEd course, in which it is one of the subject specialisms. In 1986, my right honourable friend the Secretary of State decided as part of the review of all public sector initial teacher training intake allocations for the period 1987–89 that intakes to this specialism within the institutions' secondary BEd should cease after that year. In reaching this decision, the Secretary of State took account of the views expressed by the polytechnic. The final cohort of students taking the home economics specialism will complete their course during 1989.
