To ask the Prime Minister how much the Government have spent on advertising during the last 12 months.

The Prime Minister

Information on publicity costs, including advertising is held centrally only where the expenditure is incurred through the Central Office of Information. All other publicity and information expenditure is a matter for each Department.

Expenditure on advertising by the Central Office of Information on behalf of all Government Departments for the financial year 1986–87 was £104 million inclusive of COI overheads and value added tax.
