To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many small businesses have been established in the northern region since 1983.

§ Mr. Cope
The best estimate available of the number of small businesses is from VAT information. In the three years 1984 to 1986, there were an estimated 20,100 new VAT registrations in the northern region.
