HC Deb 10 February 1988 vol 127 cc246-7W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he has had with the manufacturers of motor vehicles with a view to improving vehicle safety and safety of other road users; what steps he is taking to secure wider adoption of safer vehicles; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We attach high importance to safety-conscious vehicle design and maintenance. We regularly meet vehicle manufacturers and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to discuss the implications of new technology, new vehicle standards, vehicle defects and appropriate corrective action including recalls.

The Transport and Road Research Laboratory has been in the forefront in fostering safer vehicle design. Current ideas and developments include the pedestrian-friendly car, which could save pedestrian casualties caused by unsympathetic vehicle fronts, increased use of rear seat belts and child restraints, improved fire prevention, a softened steering wheel which could prevent facial injuries, and increased fitment of such braking features as antilock.
