HC Deb 10 February 1988 vol 127 cc226-7W
Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the level of financial contributions made by member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency for its safeguards system.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The costs of the International Atomic Energy Agency's safeguards system are met from the agency's regular budget. A total of $45 million has been allocated for safeguards in the 1988 budget of $137 million to which member states will contribute in accordance with their assessed contributions.

Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if Her Majesty's Government will increase its contributions to the International Atomic Energy Agency in support of the expanded role now played by the agency's operational safety review team.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The costs of the International Atomic Energy Agency's operational safety review teams are met from the agency's regular budget. The regular budget for 1988, to which the United Kingdom will contribute in accordance with her assessed contribution, allows for increased activity by these teams.
