Mr. Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received about the possible introduction of community treatment orders for the mentally ill; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

Representations are received from time to time on the question of compulsory treatment in the community. Discussions have been taking place within such organisations as the Mental Health Act Commission, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and MIND. At present, no concrete proposals have been put to the Department.
