HC Deb 10 February 1988 vol 127 cc216-7W
Mr. Cartwright

To ask the Secretary of Stale for Education and Science what proposals have been made to close down the department of metallurgy and metals engineering at the City of London polytechnic and for what reason; what steps are planned to safeguard the position of existing students in the event of such a closure; and when a decision is likely to be taken.

Mr. Jackson

The court of governors of City of London polytechnic decided at its meeting on 20 January to cease recruitment to all metallurgy courses. I understand that the reason for the decision was the need to contain the polytechnic's expenditure within the funds expected to be available to meet it. The polytechnic has assured all existing students that they will be enabled to complete their courses under arrangements to be made with Thames polytechnic.
