Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) to what extent the Basingstoke and North Hampshire health authority has benefited from the Government's special £50 million funding of their initiative to reduce waiting lists, in terms of financial support and additional personnel;

(2) how many more patients are likely to be treated by the Basingstoke and North Hampshire health authority as a result of additional funding through the Government's special funding to reduce waiting lists; and what categories of patients will benefit.

Mr. Newton

[holding answer 8 February 1988]: The Basingstoke and North Hampshire district health authority has been allocated £22,560 from the Wessex regional health authority's £1.4 million allocation from the £25 million waiting list fund for 1987–88. This funding is being used to finance two projects. The appointment of a bed allocation officer in the orthopaedic specialty will have a considerable impact on bed occupancy and throughput in this specialty. The appointment of an additional consultant in opthalmology is expected to enable 200 additional in-patients to be treated by 31 March 1988.

For 1988–89 the waiting list fund has been increased to £30 million. The regional allocations from the fund will be anounced shortly.
