§ Mr. MaddenTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the quality of water supplies in the metropolitan district of Bradford in relation to EEC standards; how many complaints he has received in each of the last five years on this matter; and what action is being taken to improve the quality of water supplies in the district.
§ Mr. MoynihanThe major water supply serving the metropolitan district of Bradford complies with the EC drinking water directive. Seven smaller supplies, serving parts of the district, do not comply with the directive, mainly because of naturally occurring aluminium and manganese, which are not considered to be a risk to health. I have not received any complaints about these supplies. In order to improve the water quality, Yorkshire water authority proposes to modify or replace the treatment works for these supplies. A programme of action is under way and in all but one case should be completed by April 1989.
