To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the comparative rate of caesarian delivery as opposed to spontaneous delivery of women giving birth in (a) National Health Service hospitals and (b) private hospitals during the last four years for which figures are available.

The table shows data from the hospital inpatient inquiry maternity statistics. These statistics are derived from registration material and from maternal discharges derived from a nominal one in 10 sample of inpatient records from maternity units of the National Health Service non-psychiatric hospitals in England. The latest available year for these data is 1985.

Comprehensive data on maternities in private hospitals are not available centrally.

We are expecting a report later this year from the joint working party which has been undertaking this review. We will then decide what changes might be made to the disciplinary procedures, and negotiations between the health Departments and the professions will follow.
