§ Ms. HarmanTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what evidence he has of consultants in the National Health Service(a) indulging in restrictive practices and (b) devoting a disproportionate amount of duty hours to activities not directly related to their clinical functions; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Newton[holding answer 18 December 1987]: The evidence we have comes from National Health Service managers who report that a minority of consultants may not be meeting fully the letter or spirit of their contractual obligations. It is for National Health Service managers to pursue such problems with the individuals concerned.
