HC Deb 09 February 1988 vol 127 cc133-4W
Mr. Boyes

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the impact of the sale of low-alcohol and alcohol-free beers at prices higher than alcoholic beers on the Government's campaign to discourage drinking and driving; and if he will make representations to the Brewers' Society on the situation.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Prices should be determined by supply, demand and competition. Sales of low alcohol and non-alcohol beers have been increasing rapidly. The choice of brands is increasing.

There are encouraging efforts by the brewers to promote low and non-alcoholic beers. The wide availability of attractive alternatives to alcoholic drinks is an important contribution to the campaign against drinking and driving.
