HC Deb 09 February 1988 vol 127 cc171-2W
25. Mr. Eastham

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimate he has of how much unpaid overtime working is undertaken by junior hospital doctors; and if he will make a statement.

31. Mrs. Golding

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimate he has of how much unpaid overtime working is undertaken by junior hospital doctors; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

Under their national terms of service, junior hospital doctors may not be required to undertake unpaid additional duty other than, exceptionally, in occasional emergencies or unforeseen circumstances. Information is not collected centrally on the amount of such duty, but we have emphasised to employing authorities that it should not be undertaken on a regular or prolonged basis.
