To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his estimate of the savings released by the competitive tendering of laundry services.

Mr. Newton

The most recent information held centrally is for the quarter ended 30 September 1987. Estimated annual savings generated for the three services were: domestic services £77.8 million, catering services £17 million, and laundry services £8.2 million — a total of some £103 million. Good progress has been made by health authorities in testing the cost-effectiveness of these services. As at 30 September 1987, a total of 84 per cent. had been subject to competitive tendering.
