HL Deb 08 February 1988 vol 493 c96WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they are considering for disposing of HMS Dreadnought and other old and obsolete nuclear-powered submarines; and what consultations they are having, at both national and international level, on questions of safety and the avoidance of pollution which might arise.

The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)

No decisions have yet been taken on the preferred disposal route for reactors from decommissioned nuclear submarines. A number of options are being considered and the safety and environmental implications of these will of course form part of the Government's deliberations. Once a preferred option has been identified, the Government will be in a position to consider what further consultations are necessary.
