HC Deb 08 February 1988 vol 127 c87W
Sir Peter Hordern

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many individuals received mortgage tax relief in shared accommodation, not counting married couples; and what was the value of such relief in the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. Norman Lamont

It is tentatively estimated that about 500,000 individuals (excluding married couples) are involved in multiple borrower mortgages. The direct revenue cost in 1987–88 of the additional mortgage interest relief which is available to sharers is estimated to be about £25 million.
