HC Deb 08 February 1988 vol 127 cc56-7W
Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs which countries have applied for licences for fishing in the Falkland Islands control zone next season; what fees are being levied; and what limits are to be placed on times of fishing, location, species and catch size.

Mr. Mellor

For the 1988 fishing season, the Falkland Islands Government received licence applications to fish in the Falkland Islands interim conservation and management zone for fishing vessels from the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, France, Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Poland, Chile, Taiwan, Republic of Korea and Japan. The season for finfish began on 1 January and for Loligo squid, on 1 February. The Illex squid season begins on 1 March. The seasons end on 30 June. Copies of the fees schedule, and information on the mesh regulations and fishing areas have been placed in the Library of the House, as have details of licence allocations for 1988.

Dr. Marek

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many licenses issued for fishing in 1987 in the Falkland Islands protection zone were not taken up and reallocated and how many were awarded to undertakings, individuals or companies whose primary business was not fishing.

Mr. Mellor

I will reply as soon as possible.
