To ask the Chancellor to the Duchy of Lancaster what advice he has received from the Director General of Fair Trading on the proposed takeover of Britoil by BP; and if he will refer the bid to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

My right hon. and noble Friend the Secretary of State announced on 4 February his decision not to refer the proposed acquisition by the British Petroleum plc. of Britoil plc. to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. This decision was in accordance with the advice of the Director General of Fair Trading.
