HL Deb 08 February 1988 vol 493 cc93-4WA
Lord Donaldson of Kingsbridge

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of prisoners at Ashford Remand Centre spend (a) 16 hours or more and (b) 20 hours or more on average in their cells per day in the most recent convenient week.

Earl Ferrers

Information is not available in the form requested.

Regrettably, prisoners at Ashford do have to spend much of the time locked in cells, but they are allowed to associate in groups in each other's cells. In addition to this and to time out of cells for ablutions, meals and visits, they have one hour's exercise each day, general association for one and a half hours to two hours twice a week and physical education for an hour at least once a week, and those who wish have opportunities to attend education classes and religious services. Ashford Remand Centre is due to close shortly and its functions will be taken over by Feltham Remand Centre.
