HC Deb 04 February 1988 vol 126 c730W
50. Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he has taken to ensure that British pig producers are not subject to unfair competition from imported meat.

Mr. Donald Thompson

Denmark and Holland are the major exporters of pigmeat to our market. A major study carried out by the food and drink manufacturing economic development council in 1986 concluded that there was no proof that the pig industries in those countries gained any substantial advantage over United Kingdom producers as a result of state subsidies. I am always ready to consider referring to the European Commission for action any firm evidence that national Governments are paying illegal aid to their producers.
