To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the current level of profitability in the pig industry in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Overproduction in pigmeat within the European Community, coupled with certain difficulties on third country markets, is currently having an adverse effect on the profitability of the Scottish pig industry. The Government have taken, and will continue to seek to take, steps to improve the situation within the context of the EC pigmeat regime and the CAP generally.

Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in theOfficial Report any pork processing units in Scotland which have been closed since 1979 indicating, the location of the unit and the date of closure in each case;

(2) if he will list in the Official Report every existing pork processing unit currently in operation in Scotland.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Pork processing units range from large, single species plants to very small enterprises processing pork and other meats. Lists of these units are not maintained by my Department.
