HC Deb 03 February 1988 vol 126 c635W
41. Sir Russell Johnston

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if Her Majesty's Government will now reconsider British membership of UNESCO.

Mr. Eggar

As we made clear when we withdrew from UNESCO, we would need to see clear evidence that fundamental and far-reaching reform had been achieved in the organisation before we could reconsider our position on membership. We welcome the appointment of a new director-general; but our fundamental concerns remain UNESCO's programmes and administration. We shall follow developments in UNESCO closely, in order to see how the reform process proceeds and will keep an open mind.

44. Sir Jim Spicer

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representation he has received about the Government's policy towards contacts with UNESCO.

Mr. Eggar

We have received no formal representations.
