HL Deb 03 February 1988 vol 492 c1181WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What government departments employ international lawyers and in what numbers.

Lord Young of Graffham

Precise figures are not available, but it is estimated that international legal work forms a significant part of the responsibilities of some 63 lawyers in the following departments:

Department Number
DTI 4
MAFF 10
Customs & Excise 2
DHSS 3
Employment 1
Scottish Office 7
Environment 2
FCO 24
Lord Chancellor's 2
Lord Advocate's 2
Treasury Solicitor 6

In addition to this, some 40 lawyers are periodically engaged on international legal work—in these departments, the Home Office and the Office of Fair Trading.
