HC Deb 03 February 1988 vol 126 c651W
Mr. Allan Roberts

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his Department's latest estimate of(a) the rate of deterioration in the state of repair (i) of the publicly-owned housing stock and (ii) of the privately-owned housing stock and (b) the level of expenditure required to prevent any increase in the rate of deterioration in the state of repair (i) of the publicly-owned housing stock and (ii) of the privately-owned housing stock.

Mr. Waldegrave

The latest estimates of change in the condition of the housing stock are those provided by the 1981 English house condition survey. They show that (i) Between 1976 and 1981 the condition of the publicly-owned housing stock did not change. (ii) Between 1976 and 1981 the proportion of the privately-owned housing stock estimated to require repairs costing more than £7,000 (at 1981 prices) increased from 6.2 per cent. to 7.1 per cent.

Estimates of the expenditure required to maintain the stock in a steady state are not available.
