Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many chimpanzees, baboons and gorillas were imported into the United Kingdom in each of the last 10 years, showing for each year for what purposes and from which countries of origin.

The best available statistics are published by the Department and by the European Commission in annual reports for the years 1978 to 1985 under the convention on international trade in endangered species. These and statistics as yet unpublished for 1986 and 1987, indicate the following imports during the last 10 years:
