§ 39. Mr. MossTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the progress being made towards achieving a verifiable worldwide ban on chemical weapons.
§ Mr. MellorEncouraging progress was made last year in the chemical weapons negotiations in Geneva. In July the United Kingdom tabled a paper on practical steps 635W needed to ensure the effective implementation of a ban. However, complex issues remain to be dealt with, particularly on verification and arrangements for an international inspectorate, if we are to achieve an effective convention.
