To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he has any plans to improve the provision of cervical cancer screening in the Lewisham and North Southwark health district; and if he will make a statement.

As a response to our development of screening services, the existing recall system operated by Lewisham and North Southwark health authority will be improved from April 1988 by the implementation of a fully computerised call and recall system for all local women aged between 20 and 65. With a view to reducing waiting times, the health authority is now reviewing its colposcopy service and will consider if extra sessions at Guy's hospital and Lewisham hospital would be helpful.
