To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many working days were lost through strikes in September 1987; and what was the comparable figure in September 1978.

Mr. Nicholls

The number of working days lost through stoppages of work due to industrial disputes in September 1987 is provisionally estimated as 48,000. This compares with 878,000 working days lost in September 1978.

Mr. Nicholls

The number of working days lost through stoppages of work due to industrial disputes in 1987 is not yet available. In the 12-month period to November 1987, 3,494,000 working days were provisionally estimated to have been lost. This compares with 9,405,000 working days lost in 1978.
