To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the change in the level of employment in the north-west region since January 1987.

Mr. Lee

Between December 1986 (figures are not available for January 1987) and September 1987 the latest date for which figures are available, the civilian employed labour force in the north-west region fell by 3,000. The figure is unadjusted for the effects of seasonal variations.

The civilian employed labour force is the sum of employees in employment and the self-employed.
