HC Deb 02 February 1988 vol 126 c579W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what percentage of the costs of Great Ormond street children's hospital is met(a) by his Department, (b) from charities including the Wishing Well Appeal and (c) from other specified sources.

Mrs. Currie

Approximately £40.1 million of Exchequer capital and revenue was spent by the Hospitals for Sick Children special health authority (which is also responsible for Queen Elizabeth hospital, Hackney) at Great Ormond street last year; to which was added some £2.3 million expended on behalf of a number of charitable organisations by its special trustees.

The £30 million which the Wishing Well Appeal hopes to raise over the next seven years will go towards rebuilding and equipment at Great Ormond street. The Government intend to make a contribution of approximately £27 million to this redevelopment, over and above capital committed to maintenance of existing buildings, fees and equipment. The exact size of this contribution will not be known until detailed costing of the scheme is complete.

We warmly welcome the tradition of partnership between voluntary and statutory sources of support for which this internationally prestigious hospital is already famous.
