HC Deb 01 February 1988 vol 126 cc501-2W
37. Mr. Flannery

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, in view of the disquiet in the communities along the St. Pancras to Sheffield Midland railway line, he will discuss with British Rail the future of that line.

Mr. David Mitchell

I know of no valid reason why people who use the midland main line should feel any disquiet about its future. The line has an excellent high speed train service which will be improved from next May by extra trains, including one between Sheffield and London, and British Rail has just completed a £25 million programme to modernise its signalling. The future of the line is secure.
