HC Deb 01 February 1988 vol 126 cc491-3W
Mr. Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the increases in medical, nursing and dental staff, whole-time equivalents for Sheffield health authority for the period 1979 to the latest year available; and what are the equivalent figures for England as a whole.

Mrs. Currie

Such information as is available is shown in the table.

Mr. Newton

Information to this level of detail is not collected centrally for medical staff and is available for nursing and midwifery staff in each district health authority only from September 1981 but this could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Information by regional health authority for 1981 and 1986 is given in the table.

Because of the effects of the 1982 National Health Service reorganisation figures for Sheffield district health authority for the years prior to 1982 are not available on a consistent basis with those for 1982 and later years.

Senior registrars' contracts are held by the regional health authority. The district health authority where these staff work cannot be identified centrally. There will therefore be more doctors and dentists actually working in Sheffield district health authority than are accounted for in the table.

1 Figures are independently rounded to nearest ten (10) whole-time equivalents.
2 Changes and percentages calculated on unrounded whole-time equivalents.
3 Includes permanent paid, honorary and locum staff but excludes senior registrars whose contracts are held by the regional health authority.
4 Includes all permanent paid, honorary and locum staff.
